Wake Up and Smell the Coffee
By: Angela Schaefers May 2nd, 2010Category: Your Story Matters
I used the analogy waking up and smelling the coffee in reflecting on my life. I’ve imagined myself being the coffee beans, put in the grinder each morning, smelling the wonderful, full flavor only to have someone else drink all the coffee and getting to the pot to have a few drops left for my cup! Sigh. It’s true, some days felt like I was ground up and left with nothing after that, my cup was not half full, it was empty. I could smell the delicious aroma of the coffee, yet did not get to enjoy it!
Life’s difficulties came one after another and all I could do was try to get through the day. But eventually I realized that life was not meant to be lived that way. I no longer wanted to simply survive, I wanted to live! I went on a quest to discover what authentic living was all about. It brought about a process of awakening my soul. I learned during my “awakening” that there were plenty of starts and stops along the process. Life would keep happening and providing barriers to the reflections I was intent on understanding about various things and to having the inner healing I desired. I had to learn a lot before realizing “life interruptions” cannot prevent me from living the life I wanted to live.
Each of has our own way of dealing with our life circumstances and our pain and suffering. It’s important to find the key for your own self in getting beyond being a victim of your circumstances. Strive for finding a life of purpose, with relationships that are meaningful and healthy, use each day to set out to positively impact the world around you. Most importantly, love yourself and give yourself a break even when you are not at your best. Remember that we get a re-do every morning when we start our day! Change isn’t easy and it isn’t quick. When you consider changing your habits and your way of thinking, it’s challenging! But it is possible when we start to listen to the true desires of our hearts and really want more from life then feeling ground up and left with an empty cup of coffee.
I’ve lived a life of challenges, yet each time I woke up to smell the coffee and look at what I was missing in living a life of grace that was destined for me, I got one step closer to the awakening of my soul. I realized that I deserved so much more. I will never believe I went through all that I have just to live a life with a dead soul and an empty cup. Since my soul has awakened I have concluded that I matter, that the moments in our lives matter and life has way more to offer then what many of us put into or get out of it. There’s always more… just stop and smell the coffee and you’ll see!

Wonderful post, Angela. I can’t count the number of times I have needed to have a little personal awakening to ‘stop and smell the coffee’…

You are a beautiful reflection of what dwells within us Angela. Stopping to smell the coffee, the roses – whatever surrounds us in the present moment … that’s a real gift. Thank you for your inspiration.

Angela,
Occasionally, self-improvement can seem like the old game “Mother May, I…” We take two steps forward and ten steps back. Then we receive a break and take ten toward the front and two backward. Appreciation for the reminder to stop and reflect on what steps, we are taking.

@ Sandra- very good analogy! yes and the beauty is that we can keep stepping forward, even after our steps backward… each day is a new day, especially with a fresh brewed pot of coffee
