Angela Schaefers, Founder of YOUR STORY MATTERS

I spent most of my life in southern California, prior to residing in Tampa Bay, Florida. Growing up in southern California, in a small town with a diverse culture in surrounding cities, gave me a sense that there was much more out there in the world. That feeling was, in part, what sparked my interest in various countries, people and places. Perhaps I was born an explorer, as I have certainly been called an adventurer!

Outside of being an adventurer, I always knew I wanted to be a mom. My children, two daughter’s (now adults) and my son have been my biggest inspiration and source of happiness! We have shared many happy times enjoying the world around us despite life’s challenges. We have created a family unit built on trust and love.

I had married my high school sweetheart at the tender age of 18 and became a mom two years later. My life seemed complete, until my spouse died when we were in our late twenties. Everything I thought my life would be, even though it probably would not have ended up how I thought, was forever changed. I lived life as a young, single mom waiting and hoping for something better. Eventually I found the courage to go back to school, obtained both my Bachelor and Master’s degrees and became a professional counselor.

Later on, re-married and mom to three and living in beautiful Tampa Bay, life had its struggles. None though as heart wrenching as the unexpected shock of being diagnosed with stage IV cancer. I had already overcome so much in my life; abuse, poverty, loss, it seemed so unfair. After spending the first year since my diagnosis preparing for my death, including writing my memoir Grief to Grace, I woke up one day and decided the prognosis was not going to dictate my life.

The best gift I received with cancer was the gift of gratitude. I used to think I was grateful for certain things and people in my life. Now days I am grateful for each moment, each person and every opportunity. I learned to appreciate the here and now and to live in a way wherein I feel that today was the best day, as tomorrow may never come.

Eight years later, I live my life to it’s fullest and make each day count by living authentically and encouraging others through my story. I founded Your Story Matters with the intent to share my story and others from around the globe to encourage and inspire those who may feel hopeless and discouraged. Who would have thought I would be the producer and host of an international radio show, speak publicly or write about how then life happens!

Thank you all for being a part of our journey here!
